Maya is a designer based in Brooklyn, New York. Being a conceptual creative thinker, she views design as more than a profession but rather as a lifestyle. With a keen eye for details and a profound understanding of space, type, color, imagery, style, as well as industry standards, Maya designs using versatile techniques inspired by her background in fine arts, 3D modeling, animation, and set design for theater and film. In her free time, Maya paints, designs and teaches art classes, introducing her students, grown-ups and children alike, to creative principles, illustration and fine art techniques.
Some of Maya's designs for Shape & Furnish include the "Pair of Stripes" and the "Lines and Curves" Table and Benches Collections as well as bases offered with our "Modern Classics" collection.
Originally from Greece, Alexia studied Civil Engineering in London, UK and started her career as an exhibition systems designer. Following a 10-year period of working on exhibition systems, public works, new construction and renovation projects, she redirected her talents to pursue fashion and textile design at Parsons School of Design in NYC. After graduation, she interned and worked for established NYC brands including Michael Kors, Christian Cota and Private Labels, where she gained extensive experience with custom designs – from pattern making to textiles to millwork. Now based in Connecticut, she is currently working as a freelance furniture and textile/surface designer. In her free time, she loves to paint, sew and restore old furniture.
Her approach to the process of design is both pragmatic and conceptual. Her aesthetic is sleek, sophisticated and simple. ‘Think Beautiful. Think Functional’ is her motto. Her dream commission would be to design a really brilliant tree house!
Alexia designed for Shape & Furnish the "Two Tone Slant" Table and Bench Collection in wood veneers.
